Maker Faire Rome

When in Rome... Come to Maker Faire!
Autodesk has a booth full of things to touch and play with.  Get hands on with 123D Circuits, Tinkercad, Instructables, 123D Catch on iPad, and pose for photos with the Instructables mascot.

We've also got tons of T-shirts to give away and real live people to answer your questions on our software - in native Italian and half-Italian half-English  :)

Maker Faire New York – it’s a wrap!

In continuation with our coverage of Maker Faire New York, check out the photos below! Maker Faire is always a good time, and this year's festival in New York was no exception. Tinkercad, Instructables, 123D Circuits, and more attracted new makers, long time designers, families, and guests from all over the place to the Autodesk booth. It was wonderful to meet such diverse groups of people all delighting in the joys of 3D printing and making things.

 

Our troop of Peter the Penguins were especially popular!

 

Community Manager Andy Taylor showed some awesome live demos of Tinkercad, going with the theme of DC Comics - below you can see Peter the Penguin being transformed into The Flash!

 

Thanks to everyone for another great year! It was wonderful getting to meet so many of you, from educators to long time Autodesk users, and we can't wait to see you again next year.

Autodesk + Electroninks + Cricut, a Collaboration

Maker Faires are special places where people gather to push the limits of creative expression and get hands-on with new technology.  Friendships are forged and collaborations between makers strengthen the growing movement.  Last weekend's Maker Faire in New York only reinforced this.Lining up at the gate for Maker Faire Rome 2014


In the next days and weeks keep reading our posts about cool stuff we saw at Maker Faire New York and the upcoming Maker Faire in Rome.


We wanted to start by showing the combined technology of 123D Circuits' new Circuit Scribe simulator (screen shot below), Electronink's conductive-silver pens, and Cricut's newest machine: the Explore.  The result was a working electrical circuit – in just five minutes.  (video below)

We'll keep collaborating and experimenting until we're ready to release the whole process as an export feature of 123D Circuits to Cricut.  We encourage you to try new things too.

Join The Open Source Dress – Using Tinkercad

For anyone who follows Anouk Wipprecht or is just hearing about her infamous, interactive 3D printed dresses - This is a chance to add YOUR design sensibility to one of her couture-creations...  Anouk x Polaire will be assembling 3D printed "Particles" made by people all over the world - into a complete "Open Source Dress".  There is still time to send your particle.

Anouk added LED rings to some of her own particles, using them as examples.

To participate is quite simple if you or a friend have a 3D printer.  The easiest way is to simply 3D print this existing part in Tinkercad or if you're the creative type : change that 3D model in Tinkercad so it has your own personal style - then send the print to:

We took a little time out of our day and designed / 3D printed a couple particles.  Have a look:

Below left is our version of their base model, it will easily print on a Makerbot or similar 3D printer (click to Tinker-it). Below middle is the "spikey" particle you see above, and below right is the "balloon" particle" you see above in white.


You can start with the base model (might require support material) or our blue/orange version of the base model (you can change the colors) that will require no support material.

If you don't have a 3D printer you're not out of luck.  There are several professional companies eager to perfectly-print your models and we've got them lined up on our 3D-Print page.

Circuit Scribe Makes Sound (Demo)

A few weeks ago the folks at Electroninks sent us a few Circuit Scribe kits, the same one's they'd just delivered a ton of to their Kickstarter backers.  They also sent us a few extra modules... like a motor, buzzer, light sensors, and a "blinker" (more on that later).


We posted our first unboxing video and a number of people wrote back with questions, so we made another video today to show how the buzzer and blinker modules work.  Have a look at the video below and for the full fourteen minute unboxing video and ALL the info you could ever want - check out that blog.

Circuit Scribe Modules and Unboxing

The folks over at Electroninks were kind enough to send us a couple of their Circuit Scribe kits to unbox and demo.  If you've been following their wildly successful kickstarter you know these are just now getting shipped to their 12,000+ backers.
If you missed out on the kickstarter you can buy a kit over at 123D Circuits.


If you're a 123D Circuits user you've probably seen a change to the home page that prominently features Circuit Scribe, and for good reason: we're the source for the upcoming kits and (spoiler alert!) the upcoming Circuit Scribe Virtual Editor (more on all that here).

In addition to the unboxing video (below) we thought it would be timely to give a little background on Circuit Scribe and Electroninks... Imagine a world without wires and the need to solder, a world where you can still create working, interactive circuits by simply placing components on paper and drawing connections between them with a conductive-ink pen.  Electroninks IS that conductive ink, and Circuit Scribe is the family of modular components that connect to create working circuits.


Each Circuit Scribe kit comes with an Electroninks pen and anyone can download a PDF of their instruction workbook - which is full of great getting started info about electronics and cool projects.

The Circuit Scribe components come in four types:  Power, Input, Connect, and Output.  Each type has several modules and we've chosen to show one of each (you can see them all here).  They're pretty straight forward:

POWER modules are power sources, they're how you add a battery or USB power to a circuit.

INPUT modules let you interact with the circuit.  Flip a switch, turning a dial, or move your hands over a light sensor.  If you wanted to control something manually you'd pop one of these in.

CONNECT modules form the logic of a circuit.  The NPN transistor above is a perfect example and we're so glad it's included in the kits.  With the NPN in the loop you can deliver lots of power with a tiny input signal, for example you can make a touch sensor circuit with one!  (see video for example)

OUTPUT modules are where the rubber meets the road, literally.  Motors, LEDs, Buzzers, connectors to outside circuits (like breadboards and Arduino boards).

Fab10 Barcelona

 

Autodesk was pleased to be a primary sponsor and an award giver for the inaugural Fab Awards, at the 10th annual Fab Lab Conference in Barcelona, Spain. According to their website, "FAB10Barcelona is a one week series of events focused on open and accessible technologies that will change the world. It gathers the Fab Lab Network and the citizens of Barcelona to make it a FAB City." 

Competition was fierce with over 100 excellent submissions from dozens of countries!  Most projects included their source files, so you can even make them yourself: https://www.fab10.org/en/awards

Below you can see all of the winners:

Sénamé Koffi and his team of architects & engineers from Lomé, Togo. After buying a 3D printer for their new makerspace WoeLab, they looked around and realized they already had the parts to build their next 3D printing machine.

Every year, 515 tons of broken gadgets get shipped to West Africa, where young workers burn the equipment to salvage materials like gold and copper in a dangerously toxic environment. But there’s a lot of craft and engineering that goes into electronic components, all of which is wasted when things gets melted down for scrap.  WoeLab manager Dodji Honou says the members of WoeLab asked themselves, “how can we create something of our own using what we have around us?”

Using the frame of an old desktop computer, iron rails from discarded printers, and one new Arduino board, WoeLab member Afate Gnikou invented the W.Afate 3D printer—which won First Place in the Fab Awards.

“With an old thing and a good idea,” says Honou, “you can make a solution.”

 

Second prize went to another new idea inspired by old electronics: the Ag Inkjet Circuit (AgIC) was developed by Yoshihiro Kawahara from the University of Tokyo, in collaboration with Microsoft Research Cambridge and Georgia Institute of Technology. "Ag" is the chemical symbol for silver, and this brilliant invention uses conductive silver ink to turn ordinary inkjet printers into circuit board manufacturers. To quote the AgIC website: “Say goodbye to breadboard.”

 

In third place we have the 3D Printed Prosthetics initiative at Fab Lab San Diego in California, USA, with Katie Rast presenting their innovative Gladius prosthetic leg design and their initiative to support 3D-printed hands.  Most prosthetic legs are specialized in their use so people require multiple prosthetics for different activities, but this new design provides an all-in-one solution for running or walking on different terrains.

3D printed prosthetics have an advantage over traditional designs because they are a fraction of the cost and they can easily be tailor-made. Initiatives like Fab Lab San Diego and eNABLE connect 3D printers to people who need prosthetic hands, while providing simple software for customizing hands to fit their users.

 

 

Autodesk had an award to present, and it went to the Waag Society’s inventive and customizable low-cost prosthesis. This prosthetic leg is a collaboration between Dutch and Indonesian designers, using locally-available materials like pineapple tree fibers and bamboo, a realistic alternative for people without access to MRI's and industrialized technology.

 

A popular vote awarded FabPonics from Puerto Rico the Audience Choice Prize. Their clever aquaponics design brings urban farming to the Caribbean, and uses digital fabrication to easily manufacture systems for incorporating fish tanks and water filtration into small farming modules.

Overall it was an amazing and inspiring event full of innovative people and brand new ideas. If you want to get involved in events like this, consider creating your own projects! You can even get started right here on 123D
