Just when you thought you had mastered all of the awesome features and tricks in Meshmixer, here we have a new version packed with new stuff to learn. Don't worry...Meshmixer 2.5, released today, is packed with new 3D printing features you have requested so the learning curve should be easy.

Take for example the new Hollow tool. A common workflow for making your 3D prints efficient and practical to use, creating a hollowed out object is now easier than before with this tool. Also, there are options for leaving cylindrical holes in the resulting hollowed out object making it easy to remove any internal support material and creating access to the inside of your print (see below).

 The new Bridge tool is another welcome addition for Meshmixer users, especially if you are working with captures from 123D Catch or scan data. Sometimes the holes are too large to fix easily or as desired. With the new Bridge tool, you can now join two selections on the hole's boundary with a patch.

My favorite new feature is making linear and spherical gradients when using the Make Pattern tool. See the pattern gradient above on the right hand side chair as the features transition from large to small.

Scancations and the future of photography

Bre Pettis from Makerbot recently went on vacation to the Outer Hebrides in Scotland, and used 123D Catch to create some amazing 3D models of the standing stones to be found there. He makes the point that the future of photography is in 3D. It is only slightly harder to make a 3D scan of a memorable object than to take a picture.

Now it is possible to not only photograph, but 3D scan and print memorable items that you see on your travels. Even though he used a drone (those standing stones are pretty tall!), anyone can do this too, with just an iPhone or a pocket camera.

Of course, if you have a Makerbot, you can show your friends and family a physical replica of what you saw. Imagine children recreating memorable scenes from their travels with miniatures of the things they encountered!

There are some things that you can only really fully experience in full 3D, and here is another example I love. 123D user Jaime Almonacid has some amazing captures of the Fallas in Valencia: click the picture to see them in a 3D viewer:

So when you're traveling, and see something amazing, don't just take a picture! You can create an amazing 3D scan of a memorable object, and share it with your friends in 3D, and even make a physical copy. (Always ask for permission - some museums and artists may  object).

123D Catch – improved quality and 3D printing workflows

 

Creating 3D models from your photographs just got easier today. 123D Catch V3 for Windows was just released with a notable improvement on project success and mesh quality, including a streamlined workflow for healing and 3D printing your captures in Meshmixer. Below I'll go into detail for how to use all the new features.


Most notably, there is vast improvement on automatic stitching of photographs you submit. In the previous version of 123D Catch the same set of photographs below, of the Hindu Deity Vishnu at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, required manual stitching those photos that weren't automatically stitched together. This new version has no problem automatically stitching all of the photos I've submitted. Gone are the days of manual stitching! Hurray!

All of your captures are all stored in your account at 123dapp.com, so you can create captures on the go with the iOS app, then open them for further refinement on the desktop app. Below, I regenerate a denser mesh focused only on the sculpture by lasso selecting only the sculpture, then clicking Generate Mesh in the toolbar. This will only regenerate the selected area at a quality you decide (choosing Max will have more details at the cost of longer processing time and a larger file).


Finally, clicking File...3D Print...will load the capture into Meshmixer where you can heal and prepare your capture for 3D printing in a variety of materials with a 3D printing service or right on your own desktop 3D printer at home!

The Mighty Midwest Presents: The Chicago Public Library

 

This week in the Mighty Midwest we take a look at how 3D printing is changing the way visitors experience their local public library. Libraries have always existed as repositories of learning and information, and as technologies change there is a huge opportunity for them to adapt and bring those technologies to the masses. The Chicago Public Library has set up a Maker Lab in their downtown branch to bring new technologies to the people of Chicago. In the video below you can see how this Maker Lab is transforming the library experience by bringing things like 3D modeling and 3D printing, laser cutting, and more to the average person.

On this week's installment of the Mighty Midwest we have fan favorite, Tom Burtonwood. Tom is making great strides in showcasing Chicago as an epicenter of art and innovation. Tom, a Tinkercad and 123D Catch user, is an artist residing in Chicago, and he uses 3D scanning, 3D modeling, and 3D printing to transform the way we understand objects. Tom shares his knowledge of 3D printing in a number of capacities, including giving classes at the Art Institute of Chicago, teaching students at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and helping people new to the 3D printing at the Firecat Projects gallery. Tom also joined us in San Mateo for the Bay Area Maker Faire this last May. If you saw our video from last week then you got a little sneak peek of Tom's work.

Earlier this year we had the chance to visit him all over Chicago to see how Tom helps diverse groups of people understand this new 3D printing technology that's sweeping the nation.

The Mighty Midwest presents: The Art Institute of Chicago

 

When it comes to 3D printing a lot of media attention is paid towards the coastal cities of the United States. California has Silicon Valley with its exponentially growing startup world, while New York has long played host to a thriving art and technology scene. And yet between the two lies Chicago, a hidden gem in the world of fabrication and customization. Recently we had the opportunity to explore the many maker spaces, museums, and makers themselves all dedicated to revitalizing the values of their City's past through embracing the technologies of the future.

The landscape of America is changing, and signs of this are everywhere. The midwest may be the largest indicator: where once the titans of industry stood, now stands what looks to the untrained eye like ramshackle warehouses and long-abandoned factory lines. But through the ashes blooms the new industrial revolution, the engine that is driving our society forward. 

 

Over the next month we will showcase a new aspect of Chicago's maker scene every week, starting with the extremely well-regarded museum, The Art Institute of Chicago. They are using 123D Catch as 3D scanning technology to provide a brand new experience to their visitors, a practice which will surely be adopted by institutions worldwide once they see how the AIC visitor experienced is transformed in such a positive way. Meshmixer 2.4: Collect the Gold, Silver, AND Bronze

Autodesk continued the full court press on 3D printing today with the release of Meshmixer 2.4. Most notable with this release is the integration of direct printing to popular 3D printing services: i.materialise, Sculpteo, and Shapeways. 

The integration of the printing services within the 3D printing section now allows you to print in nearly any material including food safe ceramic, jewelry quality gold and silver, and the lower costing plastics and polyamides in different solid colors to name a few. The pricing is interactive, so one can easily size up a model with the material of their choice and get an instant quote from the printing service within Meshmixer. Making the object smaller will make the 3D print less expensive, which makes it easy to bargain for how much you want to pay to see your creation made real. Creating, editing and printing to any 3D printer is a breeze, especially if you have a Type A Machines "2014 Series 1" printer. Meshmixer can send prints directly to your networked 2014 Series 1 3D printer, eliminating the need to fumble around with memory cards. Meshmixer also adds some powerful new Patterning techniques with this release, examples shown above, which creates a border based on FaceGroups. We've been having a lot of fun with this new technique to easily create variations of existing models in our library....CHECK IT OUT!

Meshmixer Update!: Your 3D Printing Sidekick Adds Patterning and More

Well, it's only been about a month since the last update to Autodesk Meshmixer, which included more powerful 3D printing workflows. Today, Autodesk Meshmixer updated again with the 3D printing workflows you requested, many general enhancements, and a few surprises.

We are having a lot of fun playing with the newly added "Make Pattern" tool and 3D printing the results. Make Pattern lets you create a unique cage-like structure that conforms to an objects surface (like below) and more.

As for the 3D printing additions, one highlight is the support for assigning multiple materials (for printers that feature multiple material prints). For example, you can now assign what objects are assigned to the Left/Right extruder for your Makerbot Replicator 2X. Here is a print I made with 2 materials on an Objet Connex 500. It is a 123D Catch capture of Autodesk's CEO Carl Bass in Vero Clear combined with the Autodesk brand "A" in Vero White. This was stylized and prepared for the Objet printer all in Meshmixer, then printed all in one go!

Autodesk Meshmixer updated today with a nice all-in-one suite for 3D printing, making it the ultimate free sculpting, mixing, painting, 3D printing application out there. Most notably, when you are ready to print your multi-mesh mashup, you can click the "Print" button which loads an arsenal of simple analysis and layout tools to arrange, heal, and even print directly to a 3D printer. See the video below for an quick teaser of what is new.

 The integration with 3D printers is intended to make the process to 3D printing even more streamlined. The healing tools require no training at all and will make just about any model printable. If you want to save time and material, then you can give your model a wall thickness so that it's hollow inside. Also, the generation of support material is an artform in itself. Of course, the experienced Meshmixer users can still find their original re-meshing, sculpting and healing tools they have grown to love for that extra level of control.

With all that in mind, here are my Top 5 Meshmixer Features for anyone interested in 3D printing.

5. New feature: "Make Solid". Now you can mash a bunch of meshes together and use "Make Solid" to heal them all together into a 3D printable object. See my Danielle Steele-like book cover I whipped together below from some 123D Catch captures I downloaded from 123dapp.com.

4. Automatic repairing (I counted 1 click!). Whether it be a messy, unprintable model or you just want a sanity check for 3D printing your refined creation. The addition of an option to automatically "Repair Selected" is an easy hands free way to make any model 3D printable. Find it in the print bed layout screen.

3. "Hollow with Wall Thickness" will save you time and material when printing. Essentially giving your model a wall thickness that you decide, making it a hollow print rather than a solid print with infill. You can visualize how thick your model is with the slick see-through representation.

2. Analysis tools: Strength, Stability, and Slicing. This unique set of tools is perfect for visualizing how your printed model will look and perform before printing it. My favorite is the "Stability" tool where I can make sure my print will stand upright. Using this, I can push the limits of how I mix and sculpt, ensuring the printed object will not topple over!

1. Print direct to your 3D printer (Windows 8.1 supported). Windows 8.1 users will have the option to print directly to their printer, bypassing the need to go through another app such as Makerware, eliminating this extra step.
