White House 3D Printed Ornament Contest!


When you’ve got a big house to decorate for the holidays, advanced planning is wise. So naturally, the White House is already thinking about this year’s holiday decor, and we're going to help them deck their halls. Instructables is excited to partner with the Smithsonian and the White House in this 3D Printed Ornament Challenge. Some of the winners of this challenge will have their work printed and hung in the East Wing of the White House during the holiday season. Additionally, those selected to be displayed at the White House will be featured on the Smithsonian’s state of the art 3D data platform, 3d.si.edu and will join a small collection of White House ornaments in the political history division of the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History.

You don’t need to have a 3D printer to participate — design an ornament with any 3D modeling software and up to 8 winning designs will be 3D printed and shipped to the White House for you. New to 3D modeling? No sweat! Head over to Tinkercad and play around with making 3-dimensional shapes. It’s really fun, and you’ll learn an awesome new skill, to boot. This is your chance to make White House history and have your art featured in their first-ever maker challenge.

The model should be no larger than 3”x 3” and reflect the magic and wonder of the holidays, so think ornaments that represent winter sports, toys, activities, symbols, and anything that inspires you during the festive winter season. Want to incorporate a little twinkle to your designs as well? Design a piece that fits or clips onto a string of lights!

To qualify, you must be a U.S. resident and create an Instructable for your ornament — and be sure to include the .stl file!  Click HERE for more info.

THE CHALLENGE

For this challenge we’d like you to create your own crossbreed or hybrid using Autodesk Meshmixer software and i.materialise’s 3D printing service.

PRIZES

We will select 3 winning creations. Winners will receive a 3D print of their figurine and an Autodesk 123D Premium Membership. All participants will get 10% discount when printing their design.

Note that the jury selects upon the 3D renders you put online, so make sure to make a very clear, visible render.

WHO CAN ENTER

There is no limit on the number of entries per contestant. #SHARKWEEK3D: Remix the ocean’s deadliest predator with Meshmixer and 123D

Here at 123D secret headquarters, we're really interested in sharks: after all, Great White Sharks have been spotted near our location, which is (sometimes) underwater.

Since we're all about creativity, and since this week is Shark Week, we couldn't help thinking about the things that could make the ocean's deadliest predator even more deadly, or at least, bizarre. What if sharks were crossbred with dinosaurs, bats, squid, robotic golems or even airplanes? We've just released an exciting new update to Meshmixer, so the opportunity for a remix challenge seems clear.

We invite you to participate in this thought experiment: download Meshmixer (free!) and some shark models from 123D, and see how you can remix sharks in 3D. Check out our helpful series of Meshmixer 101 videos to get started. For the rest of this month, we've removed the Premium download restriction on all of our shark related models.

When you're done, create a Project on 123dapp.com and make sure to tag it #sharkweek3d. We'll take a look at your submissions and make the best ones on our super-duper equipment here at secret headquarters.

 

Circuits.io is now Autodesk 123D Circuits!

Every January, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) hosts a cornucopia of new and futuristic products that are unleashed to the tech-hungry public.  We’re excited to be a part of the excitement this year by announcing that Circuits.io is officially joining the Autodesk 123D family as 123D Circuits!

 

 

123D Circuits will be joining the the free 123D apps on the digital workbench, making it easier than ever to get creative. With this acquisition, our users will now have integrated access to all their favorite online design tools, from 3D design and printing to circuitry, without ever having to leave the 123D site.

For those unfamiliar with 123D Circuits, this app enables people to design electronics online and repeatedly iterate on project ideas without encountering real-world obstacles. This program is excellent for beginners and experts alike, and we could not be happier about officially being on the same team.

Existing Circuits.io and 123D users will both get the benefits of the ecosystems.  Just go to 123d.circuits.io and log in with your Autodesk 123D account.  If you don't have a 123D account, don't worry, your existing Circuits projects will be merged after you've created one on the new Circuits.io page. Plus, those Circuits.io users with upgraded accounts will keep their benefits AND receive 123D Premium account status!

12 Days of Printing with GROWit – Tinkercad Challenge

GROWit has challenged you to create a holiday ornament or decoration design using Tinkercad for the chance to win a print!  Enter between December 6th - 17th - find out more here.

 How to Enter:

  1. Using Tinkercad, create your best holiday inspired decoration (could be an ornament, a figurine, stocking hook…your possibilities are endless, so show us your best!)  
  2. - Send your file to contests@growit3d.com
  3. - Title your submission: “12 Days of Printing – Your Name”
  4. - Include your name, shipping address and phone number
  5. - Take a screenshot of your design and share it with friends – Don’t forget to include the hashtag #12daysofprinting and tag @GROWit3D
  6. - Accepted file formats are: .stl

Rules:

  • All entries must be created using Tinkercad

Make It REAL-ly Scary with 123D and Tinkercad: Contest Winners Announced!

It was a hard job, but we've finalized the winners of our Halloween 123D Contest on Instructables!  There were some really great entries, but our judges have spoken.  Check out the winners:

The Grand Prize went to HollyMann for her Creepy Head Halloween Candy Bowl model!  She's won a Zebra Imaging holographic 24x34 print, color, with frame and light, $100 in iMaterialise 3D print credit and a 123D prize pack including a 123D t-shirt and 2 year Premium Membership, as well as an Instructables prize pack including a robot t-shirt.

 The First Place winners were: Creating a Witch with 123D Creature by Adam BeamishScary 5ft jack-in-the-box (from Tinkercad … by lockershop; and Pumpkin BBQ by nathan nash.  They scored one Zebra imaging holographic 8x10 print, color, with frame and light, $50 in iMaterialise 3D print credit, a 123D prize pack including a 123D t-shirt and 1 year Premium Membership and an Instructables prize pack.

The Runners Up won some great stuff too! A discount for 20% off an iMaterialise 3D print, a 123D prize pack including a t-shirt and 1 Month Premium Membership and an Instructables prize pack.

MakerBot and Autodesk Partner to Crowdsource 3D Printers in Schools!

It's funny that right after our last post about Obama's Industrial Revolution speech in 3D, we got confirmation of a rad new program for high schools!

Beginning November 12, 2013, individuals and corporations interested in helping get MakerBot Desktop 3D Printers in schools can visit DonorsChoose.org, a crowd funding site just for teachers, and pledge to financially support the program. Teachers then register on DonorsChoose.org for a MakerBot Academy bundle. MakerBot is contributing its own resources to launch this education initiative, along with Autodesk and other key partners.

This initiative is a unique partnership between MakerBot, DonorsChoose.org America Makes, and Autodesk, and was a response to a call to action by the President of the United States. In the recent State of the Union Address, President Barack Obama announced a new initiative to bring manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. He affirmed, “3D printing has the potential to revolutionize the way we make almost everything. We must ensure that the Next Industrial Revolution in manufacturing will happen in America. We can get that done.”

Each MakerBot Academy bundle contains a MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D Printer, three spools of MakerBot® PLA Filament, and a full year of the MakerBot MakerCare™ Service and Protection Plan. MakerBot will also support the teachers with the development of ongoing 3D printing curriculum that teachers can participate in and utilize in the classroom. MakerBot will leverage Autodesk’s software and educator curriculum as well.

“Autodesk signed on as a key partner in the MakerBot Academy initiative because helping students unlock their creativity and prepare for future careers is a core part of our mission,” said Samir Hanna, Autodesk vice president, consumer products. “Bringing together accessible applications like Autodesk TinkerCAD project-based curriculum from our instructables.com community and the MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D Printer will inspire and engage the next generation of design-minded students.”

MakerBot is also launching a MakerBot Thingiverse Math Manipulatives Challenge. Math Manipulatives are one of the most requested items on DonorsChoose.org and are an item that can easily be 3D printed in the classroom. The MakerBot Thingiverse website will hold a week-long design challenge, from November 12 through 18, 2013, for its members to quickly develop a variety of different math manipulative 3D designs that can then be available immediately to teachers that receive the MakerBot Academy 3D printing package.

What can you do??

A. Visit DonorsChoose.org and pledge your support. Individuals and corporations can help fund the MakerBot Academy 3D Printing package by making a tax-deductible donation via DonorsChoose.org.

B. Tell schoolteachers about the MakerBot Academy program and encourage them to register on DonorsChoose.org right away. Students and their community can also help teachers raise the additional funds they need to bring the MakerBot Academy 3D Printing bundle into the classroom.

C. Participate in the Thingiverse Challenge to develop models teachers can use to improve Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

MAKE IT REAL-LY SCARY WITH 123D – NOW LIVE ON INSTRUCTABLES!

 

We've officially launched a contest on Instructables called Make it Real-ly Scary with 123D

The contest runs through the end of October and is open call for people to use any of the 123D apps as a component to their Halloween project.  It can be as simple as remixing another user's model or as time-consuming as laser-cutting a giant Cthulhu that terrorizes the kitchen at the Autodesk offices.  

We have some pretty great prizes too! Our friends at Zebra Imaging and iMaterialise are the Prize Providers for the contest and have forked over some pretty righteous goods.  Grand prize is a HUGE hologram (24"x34") from Zebra Imaging, $100 print credit with iMaterialise, and a 2-year Premium membership to 123D!  Zebra hasn't offered this size hologram directly to our users before, so we're excited to see one.

Instructables Green Design Contest!

In celebration of Earth Day and all things eco-friendly, we’re holding a Green Design Contest, and showcasing the best of Green Design with our media partner TreeHugger! Think “green” and submit an eco-friendly Instructable that uses sustainable materials or is energy efficient by design.

For example, use recycled materials such as reclaimed lumber instead of new virgin growth wood. Or, choose to use renewable, responsibly sourced materials with minimal-to-no toxicity such as plant-based PLA plastic instead of oil-based ABS plastics. If you’re designing something with electronics, consider how much power the circuit consumes, or even how much electricity is needed when it's not in use and in stand-by mode. Also think through the end-of-life considerations of the product, such as making sure it’s easy to repair, and the individual parts can be reused or eventually recycled down the line.

Come up with any project with these factors in mind, and you could win over $1,000 in prizes including a Voltaic Systems OffGrid Solar Backpack, ReadySet Renewable Energy Kit with Solar Panel and LED light, Nokero Solar Light Bulbs and a $500 REI gift certificate.
